What Is the Role of a School Principal in Curriculum Design?

Although school principals might seem like merely the figurehead of a school, they play an active role in curriculum design. Together with teachers, principals identify goals for the school's curriculum and establish curriculum design strategies that will meet these goals. Moreover, as the leader of the school, it is the principal's responsibility to make sure that teachers consistently implement curriculum that aligns with school goals.

    • Principals are also responsible for regularly assessing the curriculum once it has been implemented. They can do this every quarter, semester or academic year. Assessment comes in many forms. Principals might sit in on classes to gauge how well the teacher is presenting the material and students are absorbing it. Students' performance in the classroom and on standardized tests is another way to assess the efficacy of a curriculum. Armed with this information, principals can revise the curriculum as needed.
