How to Get a State Certification with a Low Cumulative Average and a Passing Praxis

In order to be a teacher in most states, you must take an exam to prove your proficiency level in basic skills such as grammar, reading and mathematics. The Praxis examination is a test administered by the Educational Testing Service. It is most often part of the certification process for those desiring to get teaching certification in public school systems.

Get official transcripts from the institution that issued your teaching degree even if it states your low cumulative average. Even if you have a degree that is not specifically a teaching degree, you can still get official transcripts and give them to the State Board of Education. You may then have to enter a teacher induction program to catch you up to the level of other teachers that specialized in teaching. All applicants, regardless of their cumulative average scores must provide transcripts to the State Board of Education as part of the application process for a teaching license.

Get a copy of your Praxis scores after you've completed the exam. It usually takes about four weeks after you take the Praxis test to receive your scores by mail. Check your scores to make sure you've met the minimum passing requirement for your state. If you did not meet the minimum, you can re-take the test until you do. Make a few copies of them so that you have some for your records. If you have already been hired as a student teacher, or as part of an alternative program, you'll need to present your scores as proof that you have some level of proficiency. Any school that hires you will want to keep your education transcripts on file, but a low cumulative average will not necessarily keep you from getting and keeping the job.

Apply for your teaching license and participate in a teacher induction program. Most State Boards of Education will not give you a state certification without proof that you have successfully completed a teacher induction program. They may give you an initial or trial license, but you cannot get a professional license until completing that program. In any case, the process of getting a state teaching certification includes lots of checks and balances that ensure only the highest qualified professionals get into and remain within the teaching profession.
