Select a portfolio holder. Seek a three-ring binder type holder, allowing you to easily add and remove papers as you create and update your portfolio.
Include an up-to-date resume. Create a strong resume that outlines your goals, education and experience and place this as the front page in your portfolio. For optimum usefulness, make several copies of this resume and keep them in a sheet protector, allowing individuals considering you for employment to take a copy.
Add a philosophy of education. Behind your resume, place a philosophy of education. Write up a several-paragraph essay in which you explain how you feel students learn best and outline how you perform your duties as a paraeducator. This simple statement gives would-be employers a glimpse into your mind, allowing them to more effectively determine whether you are the right candidate for the job.
Request references from individuals with whom you have worked. Ask teachers under whom you have worked or administrators with whom you have had experience to compose letters of reference. Place these behind your philosophy of education in your portfolio.
Create pages of pictures showing yourself in action. Ask the teacher under whom you work to take pictures of you tutoring students or performing other duties. Create several pages of images and place them in the portfolio.
Include sample lessons you have used with success. Place the lesson plan along with any supplementary material in the portfolio, showing potential employers what you can offer them should they hire you.
