As the name implies, the Auditory Processing Abilities Test measures the ability to recognize sounds. In some children, speech delays are caused by hearing issues. They are hearing the sounds incorrectly or not at all and are therefore unable to reproduce the sounds. This scale will produce a measure of which sounds the child is able to process accurately and which sounds the child cannot. Repeating the test will demonstrate any improvements in auditory processing.
The Arizona Articulation Proficiency Scale is one of the fastest ways to determine a child's ability to articulate sounds. By showing the child 42 pictures from a spiral-bound book, you can determine how many sounds the child is able to articulate and rank any articulation issues based on severity.
The Comprehensive Receptive & Expressive Vocabulary Test is used to determine receptive and expressive vocabulary skills. It has two sub-tests and gives standard scores and percentiles, which is helpful in explaining to parents the nature of the speech delay, if one exists.
The Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing helps identify any issues in phonological naming or memory. Deficits in phonological processing have been tied to problems in learning how to read. The kindergarten version of this test has seven sub-tests and a supplemental test, which together encompass all phonemes.
