What Is a Good Literature Class Getting to Know You Activity?

The beginning of a new school year can be both fun and scary for students. Educators can use literature exercises to ease the transition from long holidays and summer breaks. These "getting to know you" activities are beneficial to students, as well as teachers. Children of all ages enjoy reading books and recognizing character traits in themselves. Books that contain learning lessons and problem-solving skills work well with these activities. A trip to the library or favorite books brought from home will provide a wealth of literature characters to discuss, draw and act out.
  1. Finding Books With Favorite Characters

    • Take a class trip to the library.

Take a class trip to the school or neighborhood library. Assist students in choosing books with interesting characters. Encourage them to choose characters with traits similar to their own. Allow students to bring a favorite book from home if they prefer.

    Make Drawings of Literature Characters

    • Have children draw their favorite characters.

Give the students drawing paper, crayons, pencils and markers. Ask them to draw pictures of their favorite literature character. Students can cut out their pictures and make a collage if they like.

Students Take Turns Discussing Their Characters

    • Students take turns discussing their drawings and characters.

Have students take turns discussing their favorite book characters. Encourage them to decide what they have in common. Ask open-ended questions to promote discussion. Have them point out examples from their book and drawings.

    Put on a Play

    • Have students put on group plays.

Assign students to groups. Have each group write a brief character play. Characters don't have to be from the same or even similar books. Skits that include odd varieties of characters will be more interesting and funny.
