Anti-Bullying Door Decorations for Teachers

No one is innocent when bullying occurs, which according to the American Medical Association (2003), results in 3.2 million youth victims every year. Richard Gross, M.D. (of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) explains that, "We are all either bullies, bullied or bystanders." Victims of bullying are hurt by a stronger student who intentionally harms them, aware that the victim is weaker or disadvantaged. Bullying frequently occurs in schools where educators have the responsibility to keep students safe.
  1. Words of Encouragement

    • Divide the class in half and assign one half the task to write words of encouragement for the bully to stop bullying and the other half the task to write words of encouragement for the victim. The words of encouragement can be written on hearts, stars or flowers cut out of construction paper. Or students can come up with their own ideas of how to present their words.

    Mural

    • Have students create a mural for the door. The background of the door can be a picture drawn of the school campus. Ask students to create a figure that looks like themselves to place on the campus, doing something positive. Students can add a conversation bubble to their figure that includes positive thoughts.

    Answer a Question

    • Pose a question on a bullying theme and ask students to each write an answer. For example, you can ask questions like, "Why do bullies bully?", "How does bullying hurt others?" and "How can I prevent bullying at my school?" Have students write their answers in large print or font and allow them to decorate the paper. Post the question on the door and surround it with the answers your students provide.

    Inspiration from Anti-Bullying Books

    • Anti-bullying books can be very educational and helpful in fighting bullying in your school. Read a book together as a class and ask students to draw something from the book on a blank sheet of paper and write at the bottom of the sheet what they learned from the book. Display students work on the door and post the title of the book in the upper center of the door.

Another option would be to ask students to read an anti-bullying book of their choice and write a paragraph about the books message. Ask students to include the book's title and author for reference. Use students' writings to decorate the door.

    Have a Contest

    • Have a whole school anti-bullying door contest, where each class works together to design and decorate their classroom door in an anti-bullying theme. Then have a judging committee issue a reward (pizza party or extra recess) to the class with the winning door.

The individual classroom can hold their own anti-bullying door contest and ask students to create poems, art work or submit photos on anti-bullying themes to decorate the door with. Judge the submissions and affix the winning items on large award ribbons cut from construction paper. Surround the winners with all the other submissions.
