First you will have to measure the dimensions of the space through which you are moving things and of the furniture that you want to move. However, because you are using two-dimensional scaled drawings to solve this problem, you need only to measure length and width. After you have the dimensions, then you need to decide on a scale for your space and your furniture. Then, using this scale, draw the space through which you want to move your furniture and rectangles to represent your furniture. Cut out the rectangles and move them through the space while keeping space between the walls and the edges of your scaled furniture models.
Choose an object to draw to scale. This object could be something as simple as a pencil or as complex as a piece of silverware with an intricate pattern in the handle. Then decide on a scale that will allow you to draw a recognizable copy of the object and draw it. If you are working with a complex object, then drawing the surface or object that it is on (such as a desk or tabletop) might help you keep your drawing in proportion.
Decide on the lengths, the angles and the inclines of your roller coaster's track. For example, your track could start with a steep drop, then move into a more gradual downwards incline and then become flat. If you want your track to be longer, you could put a loop in the middle of your flat section and then you could finish your track with an upward incline. Then decide on a scale for your drawing and write this scale down on your drawing for future reference. With this information in hand, you can then draw your scale model on graph paper to keep your dimensions even and clear. It might also help if you use the squares on the graph paper for your scale. For example, you could decide that one square is equal to 1 foot.
Drawing a map to a set scale involves a lot of preparation but creates something that is very practical: a map of a large area that can fit on a much smaller piece of paper. You can prepare for this activity by choosing a place such as a park or your room and then measuring the distances between key points (such as swings and the water fountain in a park, or your dresser and your bed in your room). After you have these measurements, you will also want to sketch a quick map of the space you have chosen. Then use a scale to work from your sketch and your measurements to draw an accurate, scaled map of your chosen space.
