How to Use Excerpts to Teach Comprehension

Students not only need to learn how to read, but they also need to understand the material they are reading. It can be difficult to teach reading comprehension with an entire book or a long story, so using excerpts can be a way to make the process easier for the student. Because an excerpt is a short passage, the student has less material to process, making it easier to understand what he has read. As his comprehension skills improve, he will be able to understand longer pieces of text, but it is good to start out with the shorter ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the title of the excerpt. This will give her a preview of what the story is about, so she knows the subject of the excerpt before she begins reading. Take a look at any pictures and captions associated with the excerpt, as they should also be able to help her gain an understanding of the passage.

    • 2

Read the first few sentences of the excerpt, or have the student silently do it on his own. Ask him to explain what he thinks the purpose of the passage is and what will happen next. This will force him to re-examine what he has just read and actively think about what is yet to come in the text.

    • 3

Finish reading the excerpt out loud or have the student read it silently on her own. Let her know that you will be asking her questions when she is done reading, to encourage her to read actively. If she does not answer the questions correctly, ask her to re-read the passage.

    • 4

Ask the student questions about the excerpt. Questions should require specific answers such as the names of characters, specific events that took place and other details that you would have to have read the story to know the answer.

    • 5

Ask the student to come up with some questions about the excerpt. This can be a wide variety of things, including what he thinks happened before or after the passage. This will cause him to give the excerpt thought in greater detail, thus forcing him to comprehend the material.

    • 6

Summarize the information learned in the story with the student. Ensure that she mentions key points and displays an understanding of the material she has just read in the excerpt.
