Teaching Math Skills Using Jeopardy

Children will enjoy learning math more if their lessons are in the form of a game. Games provide a great way to review material you've already taught to get a good idea of how much students have learned. One game that you can use to review math is Jeopardy.
  1. Jeopardy Basics

    • In Jeopardy, players choose a category and a point value, then the host reads the information, which is in the form of an answer. For example, the information may read: "This is what you get when you multiply four by six." The player must then respond in question format, in this case, "What is 24?" If the response is correct, the player gets the point value of the question added to his score. If the player answers incorrectly, the point value is deducted from the player's score and other players can buzz in to attempt to answer the question. The game ends when all the answers are used or when the time is up.

    Format

    • You can draw a board with the Jeopardy categories and point values on the chalkboard, crossing off each point value after the answer has been read, for a simple version. You can also create or download a PowerPoint presentation that includes a slide with the categories and contains hyperlinks that bring you to the answers when you click on the point values (see the Resource section).

    Categories and Answers

    • You can choose categories to suit whichever unit you're teaching. Answers and responses can involve vocabulary, math problems or problems requiring students to provide equations. The number of answers in each category should equal the number of categories, with questions increasing in difficulty as the point values increase. You can make the game shorter or longer by varying the number of categories.

    Teamwork

    • Divide your students into two to four teams. You can have students take turns answering questions for their team if there are enough answers, so everyone will have a turn, or you can have every student on a team answer each question on paper when it's their team's turn, then calculate the points the team receives based on the number of right answers.
