Materials to Support & Improve the Learning Environment

A student's learning environment can positively or negatively impact his ability to learn. The availability of visual aids, books, supplies, games and technology support can improve the learning environment by facilitating the learning and teaching process. The unavailability of such materials can make learning and teaching impossible in some circumstances.
  1. Visual Aids

    • Visual aids support and improve the learning environment. Teachers use chalkboards, overhead projectors and paper printouts to illustrate and guide learning. Students are supported with visual aids by being able to visualize the lesson as the teacher explains it. Whether the subject is math or reading skills, a teacher's ability to write the lesson as she describes it can improve the student's understanding.

    Books and Supplies

    • In a classroom setting, students need books and supplies, such as pencils, protractors, 6-inch ruler and workbooks to practice their lessons. Some students do not have regular access to books and supplies, which can render their educational experience spotty and more challenging than for students who consistently have these learning materials. The learning environment is incomplete without books and supplies.

    Games

    • A wide range of materials can be used to make a classroom-based game, including balls, yarn and paper as well as board games. Teachers employ the use of games to reinforce lessons taught in the classroom. Games can be designed around the lesson or highlight a key element in the lesson, such as identifying shapes or using logical reasoning. Most importantly, lesson-oriented games enliven the atmosphere in the learning environment. Students experience learning in the classroom as fun and are encouraged to approach classroom learning with zeal.

    Technology

    • Technology can greatly improve and support the learning environment. Computers and the Internet connect students in one learning environment with students in another. The connection may lead to a promotion of ideas and expansion of learning capabilities for such students. Computers may also support students learning a variety of skills such as typing, programming, mathematics and art. Calculators are smaller computers used specifically for enhancement of learning certain types of math, such as calculus and trigonometry.
