Cool Math Word Problems

Math word problems are a great tool for teachers to make math relatable to real life situations for their students and allow the students to improve their reading comprehension skills while doing math. Cool math word problems can also work to make math a fun experience for students who find it daunting.
  1. Addition & Multiplication

    • Joey just decided to go to his favorite theme park for a day with his best friends as he plans on going on a roller coaster for the first time in his life. He knows that the tickets to the theme park cost $55, lunch will cost him $15 and he wants to spend $10 on a souvenir. Joey works at a local store and makes $8.50 an hour. How many hours does Joey have to work to pay for his trip to the theme park with his friends?

    Subtraction

    • Patricia was given $150 from her grandmother after she graduated from high school and is looking to buy a few new things for college with the money. Patricia decided to buy seven new storage bins for $5.65 each, school supplies for $47.37 at her local office supply store, and a new backpack for her school supplies and laptop for $18. After she buys everything with her graduation money, Patricia is asked by her friends if she wants to go to the movies. Patricia knows that a movie ticket costs $12.70; does she have enough money to go to the movies with her friends?

    Geometry

    • Kari is measuring for a new Star Wars rug to place in her room and wants to know if it will fit. She knows that the rug has a square footage of 55 feet and a ratio of 2 by 3 feet. Kari needs to know if her room that is 5 feet by 8.5 feet is large enough to place her Star Wars themed rug in. Will the Star Wars rug that Kari wants fit in her room?

    Algebra

    • Joseph wants to buy a new iPad 2. He works at a local computer store and with his employee discount he can buy the iPad 2 he wants for $800. Joseph makes around $67 every day, seven days a week, and he wants to know how long it will take for him to be able to buy an iPad 2. Create a algebraic expression to show how many days it will take until Joseph can buy his new iPad 2.
