In order to write a successful essay, you must first figure out what you want to write about, who will be the reader and what message you would like to convey to this reader. Once this has been established, begin by researching. Use the library, Internet and other resources to read about your chosen topic. Take notes.
Brainstorm by writing down thoughts, ideas, phrases or words as they come to mind. Prepare an outline or a diagram of your ideas to help you organize them. A traditional outline is made by writing the topic title at the top of the page. Use the Roman numerals I, II and III to organize your three main ideas. If the goal of the paper is to convince someone of something, write your three main arguments. If the idea of the paper is to explain a process, write the three main steps. If the goal of the paper is to inform the reader, write the three main topic categories. If you are making a diagram instead, write your main topic title in the center of the page in a circle with three lines reaching out from the center. At the end of each line, draw another circle and write the three main ideas in these circles. Write down any facts or information to support these ideas.
Grab your reader's attention with your first few sentences. Present an interesting fact or surprising bit of information or a quotation about your subject. Or you could pose a provocative question. This will lead in to your thesis statement. This statement has two parts. Tell the reader what the essay will be about and then describe the point you will be making.
In a traditional essay, there are three main body paragraphs. Devote each paragraph to one of the three main ideas you decided upon. Use the body paragraphs to support, elaborate and explain your thesis statement.
In your conclusion paragraph, briefly restate the point of your essay in a few sentences with a new twist. Leave the reader with some food for thought; use a thoughtful quotation, a powerful image or state what action may need to be taken or why the topic is important.
