Homemade Homecoming T-Shirt Ideas

Homecoming celebrations involve the entire student body and typically revolve around a football or basketball game. Throughout the week, the school might hold different theme days that get students involved in the activities. Buying class shirts is an expensive prospect, but homemade shirts are much cheaper. Use homemade homecoming shirt ideas to make shirts for every student.
  1. Athletic Shirts

    • Since homecoming is often connected to a sporting event, make shirts that look like athletic jerseys. Use plain T-shirts in one of the school colors. Pick duct tape that matches the other school color and wrap a piece around each arm, mimicking the look of jerseys. Use more tape to create different numbers on the center of each shirt back, adding to the jersey look. Add the same number to the front of the shirt and write the students' last names on the back. Place the name directly above the numbers.

    Funny Phrases

    • Create handmade homecoming shirts that use funny phrases and images relating to the celebration. Use the mascot of the school or, use the opposing team's mascot. If your team is playing the Badgers, then draw or paint on an image of a badger with star-crossed eyes and a funny expression on its face. Write "Beat the Badgers" or something similar on the back. For a more basic look, write "Wild Thing" on the front of the shirt and the details of the homecoming events on the back.

    Homecoming Shirt Competition

    • You don't need a fancy printer or a lot of crafting items to make a basic homecoming shirt. Give the students fabric paint and ask each one to bring in a shirt from home. Let the students go wild, creating their favorite design that relates to homecoming events. You can even turn it into a competition, by asking each class to pick out their favorite design and showcasing those throughout homecoming week. Let the students vote on their favorite shirt from the top designs.

    Use Stencils

    • Stencils are a simple way to give all homecoming shirts a similar look. Buy stencils from a local craft store and use them in combination with fabric paint and sponge brushes. Use a piece of cardboard inside the shirt, to keep the shirt flat during painting. Place the stencil on the front of the shirt and apply paint across the top. When you peel the stencil away, the painted design remains on the shirt.
