Fun Games for US States & Capitals

Teach students the U.S. states and their capitals by engaging in fun games and activities that not only challenge them to learn, but also entertain them. Address all learning styles by mixing visual, verbal and even kinetic activities utilizing textbook resources and technology provided by the school, such as smart boards, projectors and computer labs.
  1. Matching Games

    • Create handmade cards for matching games.

When matching states to their capitals, the obvious choice for fun and games is to create and match pairs. Creating cards for each state and its capital allows for games of Concentration, Go Fish and other popular card-matching choices. For a real challenge, try timed contests to see who is the first to match up every state with its capital.

    Computer Games

    • Search online and find many interactive games.

A quick search online brings up many interactive games to learn states and their capitals. Enlarge computer images by projector for whole group activities, or take a trip to the computer lab or library for individual access. Check the resource materials for the class geography textbook as many of the major textbook publishers now include enrichment exercises on CD.

    Puzzles

    • Find puzzle generators online.

Word searches, cryptograms and crossword puzzles are all popular options for educational word games. Many textbook websites include puzzle generators for teachers to create their own puzzles. Smaller puzzles make perfect warm-up exercises, and larger puzzles may be taken for homework if there is not enough class time to finish. Timed activities provide an additional challenge.

    Songs

    • Catchy songs help students remember.

Mnemonic devices such as songs, chants and poems help students memorize new information easily. Catchy songs about the 50 states and their capitals allow students to entertain themselves and others while learning. Consider working with music teachers to incorporate extra time for learning the songs during music class. Students may even surprise you by coming up with their own variations.
