How to Write Better in Cursive

Students generally learn cursive writing skills early in elementary school -- some time between first and third grade. After learning the letters, practice will cement the techniques and help students develop good handwriting habits. Although handwriting becomes a personal trademark, you can write better in cursive if you focus on your technique. With basic effort, your penmanship can improve and become more legible.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit comfortably in a chair with a table for a work surface to practice your cursive writing. Place a piece of lined paper on the table for writing, slanting the paper slightly to the left if you are right-handed. A left-handed writer might need to place the paper on the table so the left arm forms a right angle to the bottom of the writing paper in order to write neatly and comfortably.

    • 2

Hold the pencil or pen in your writing hand, grasping the pencil without holding it too tightly. Keep your grasp firm, yet comfortable.

    • 3

Form the cursive letters slowly and deliberately, moving your forearm and shoulder to create the letters instead of moving your fingers and wrist. When you move your fingers and wrist to write instead of your arm, you lose some of the freedom that can help you make letters that are more attractive. Move your arm across the paper as you write lines of cursive letters.

    • 4

Strive for a slight slant to the right as you form your cursive letters. Left-handed writers should not attempt a right slant, instead writing with no slant or a left slant.

    • 5

Make your cursive letters a size that makes it easy to read them -- between seven and 11 words for each line of lined writing paper. Making cursive lettering this size creates neater and more attractive writing.

    • 6

Practice forming separate letters that you wish to improve or practice with entire words. Write personal letters to people to practice your cursive. Write out a shopping list or copy text from the newspaper to practice your cursive writing.

    • 7

Work daily to improve your cursive writing. Each time you write words in cursive, take the time to form the letters carefully to make neat writing a habit.
