Pick a trait that you would like to describe like "bravery." Write the trait on a piece of paper and circle it. This will form the center of your exercise.
Think of positive descriptive adjectives that describe that trait like "valuable." Write the adjectives down in a circle around your trait. Draw lines from those word to the center to form a web. Repeat this step using negative examples like "not easy."
Brainstorm positive examples that describe where this trait has been used like "going into battle" or "doing what you think is right." Write these out in a circle outside the descriptive adjectives and connect them to the center. Repeat this step using negative examples like "refusing to run away when you're afraid."
Write your core word on a line below the web, followed by "is", a blank followed by a comma and "it is not" then a blank and a semicolon. Next write "it can mean", add a blank, "and" and another blank. For example: Bravery is _______, it is not ______ ; it can mean ____________ and _____________ .
Fill in the blanks with the descriptions in your web, moving to the outside of the web with each successive blank. Choose descriptions that flow together well and add modifiers where appropriate. Ex: "Bravery is valuable, but it is not always easy; it can mean doing what you think is right and refusing to run away when you're afraid."
