Divide the class into groups or ask volunteers to come to the front of the classroom. Describe a scenario to them such as a group of people ordering food in a restaurant or a confrontation with the neighbor. Allow students to take a few minutes to prepare the scene. They must speak all of the dialogue in English. Encourage them to use props and/or costumes to make the experience more lively for everyone.
Encourage students to interact with one another. Distribute handouts with statements such as "Find someone who went to another country for summer vacation" or "Find someone who owns a pair of blue sneakers." Students have to walk around the classroom and interview students to find out the answers. Make sure that they are all speaking in English to one another.
Bring in a variety of grocery store items to your next class. You could bring in such things as boxes of tissues, bags of chips or bottles of water. Assign some students to act as shoppers and another one to act as the store clerk. Give the students fake money. They must use the money to buy a certain amount of items from a prepared grocery list. Furthermore, the clerk must tell them how much they owe and how much change they are getting.
Pass a roll of toilet paper around the room. Tell students to take as many pieces as they want when the roll comes to them. Once the roll has gone around the room, have the students count how many pieces they have taken. Instruct the students to share one piece of information about themselves for each piece of toilet paper they have taken. They must say the information in English.
