How to Test Whether a Solution Is an Acid or a Base?

A litmus paper is used to test whether a solution is an acid or a base. Litmus papers come in two colors: blue and red. An acid turns a blue litmus paper to red. On the other hand, a base turns a red litmus paper to blue. Litmus papers are available at any chemical store.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase litmus papers from a chemical store in your local area. Another option is to order the litmus paper online from a website.

    • 2

Dip the red litmus paper into the solution. If the solution turns blue, it is a base. If the litmus paper shows no change in color, see Step 3.

    • 3

Dip the blue litmus paper into the solution. If it turns red, the solution is acidic in nature. If the paper still shows no change in color, the solution that you are testing is neutral.
