How to Make 10% HCL Solution With Muriatic Acid

Muriatic, or hydrochloric, acid -- a concentrated water solution of hydrogen chloride -- can adjust the pH of basic solutions. Muriatic acid uses include the purification of common salt; household cleaning; leather processing; and as a component in the production of organic compounds. The range of concentration of muriatic acid lies between 36.5 percent and 38.0 percent, with a density of 1.189 g per ml. Concentrated muriatic acid contains 1 g of pure muriatic acid per approximately 2.25 ml.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety goggles and an acid-resistant apron and gloves to guard against severe burns that the highly corrosive muriatic acid can cause.

    • 2

Measure 72.5 ml of deionized water into a 250 ml beaker.

    • 3

Add 22.5 ml of muriatic acid to the water slowly, stirring constantly with a glass rod. Observe the rise in temperature of the solution.

    • 4

Allow the solution to cool before transferring to a glass bottle. Close the acid-resistant cap and keep it tightly closed for storage.
