How to Teach Preschoolers About Inclusive Practices

Preschoolers are exposed to many new social experiences, such as the inclusion of students with disabilities. Students with disabilities are included in the preschool environment with other children for many different reasons. Acknowledging the fact that a preschool student is disabled and educating the preschool class about the disability of the student can teach children how to include disabled people in their lives without discriminating against them. Teaching preschoolers about inclusive practices can enhance early childhood learning.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold preschool class introductions. Ask every child to say their name and a fact about themselves. Encourage children with disabilities to tell the children of the class about their disability.

    • 2

Schedule a day to talk about the differences and similarities between all the children in the class. Name several activities, and ask children to raise their hand when they hear one that they enjoy. Tell the children to look around and identify other children with the same interests as their own.

    • 3

Plan activities that accommodate every child in the class. An example could be a field trip to a museum if the museum is handicap accessible. Another example could be a friendly game of telephone where the students sit in a circle and pass a piece of information around. Encourage other students to aid the disabled children when they are in need of help.

    • 4

Form a class club that involves every member of the preschool class. Hold elections for club positions, and encourage every child to participate. Nominate the children with disabilities for the same positions as children without disabilities. Explain to the children that the acceptance of all people is important.
