How to Teach Traditional Grammar

In the English language, traditional grammar refers to the rules that govern the language, so-to-speak. Understanding how to use grammar is vital for effective written communication. Many find the subject to be boring and in fact, it often can be, but it is still an important subject to learn. In order to effectively teach and foster comprehension of this subject, use engaging activities that capture the interest of students.

Instructions

  1. Parts of Speech

      Review the different parts of speech with students. Provide examples of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives, for example. After providing examples, ask students if they can provide examples of the different parts of speech.

      Photocopy a page from a book that contains several examples of the different parts of speech. Alternatively, you could type up and photocopy your own short story that contains several examples of the different parts of speech. Distribute the sheets to your students.

      Divide students into groups equivalent to the parts of speech you will be focusing on. For example, if you will be focusing on three parts of speech, divide your students into three groups.

      Assign a part of speech to each group. For instance, assign one group nouns, one group verbs and one group adjectives. Assign a colored crayon to each part of speech: blue nouns, red verbs and yellow adjectives.

      Explain to groups that they are to read through the page and circle the words that illustrate the part of speech they have been assigned.

      Invite groups to share the parts of speech they have circled. While each group shares, the remaining groups should circle the respective parts of speech on their own pages. Students will end up with each part of speech that was focused on circled on their pages.

    Punctuation

      Discuss different types of punctuation, such as the period, comma, colon and semicolon. Provide examples of when each type of punctuation should be used.

      Type a sheet that contains several sentences, but omit the punctuation marks. Photocopy the papers and distribute them to your students.

      Explain to students that the sentences on the page have no punctuation marks and that you need their help to properly punctuate the sentences. Provide students with a red colored pencil and instruct them to read the sentences and fill in the punctuation marks.

      Review the sheets with your students. Ask volunteers to share the punctuation marks they added to the sentences. Instruct students to check their papers as the punctuation marks are shared to ensure they have properly punctuated their sentences.
