Recommended Reading for 10 Year Old Boys

Sure, reading books helps children expand their vocabulary, enhance their analytical thinking, improve writing abilities and is strongly correlated to intelligence. But perhaps more importantly for young ones, reading can be fun. Along with a variety of other stories, here are some books that are sure to capture the attention and hearts of 10-year-old boys.
  1. Shiloh

    • "Shiloh" by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a must-read book for boys who love animals. The 1992 Newbery Medal-winner tells the story of a West Virginian young boy, Marty Preston, who stumbles upon an abused beagle. As the story unwinds, Marty faces a multitude of ethical questions, such as whether he should return the dog to its abusive owner. While the writing and story are beautiful enough for adults to appreciate, the story introduce thoughts of morality to its young readers, too.

    The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe

    • Fantasy-loving boys will be enchanted by, "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe," the first book in C.S. Lewis' series, "The Chronicles of Narnia." The riveting story takes place during World War II and tells of four siblings who discover a passageway in the back of a wardrobe. Through the wardrobe, the children enter another world: Narnia. This book follows the children through their adventures, which involve mythical creatures, talking animals, a majestic lion and the evil White Witch.

    Goosebumps

    • Readers looking for a fright won't be able to put down the spine-chilling books by R.L. Stine in his "Goosebumps" series. Boys can pick from a variety of titles, from "Monster Blood III" to "The Curse of Camp Cold Lake" for a story that is sure to spook them. The "Goosebumps" books are easy to read so even children who have trouble reading can fall under their spell.

    Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

    • In his novel, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," author Roald Dahl creates memorable characters and a entertaining plot-line that 10-year-old boys will enjoy. Boys will enjoy reading about how poor Charlie Bucket wins the opportunity of a lifetime: a tour of Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory. Inside the factory walls, memorable characters like gluttonous Augustus Gloop or snotty Violet Beauregarde make the story come alive. After finishing the novel, boys may want to read other Dahl books, such as "James and the Giant Peach" or "Matilda."
