How to Simplify Rational Expressions Using the TI-89

Simplifying a rational expression on the TI-89 is straightforward, as long as you include the correct symbols and punctuation. When entering the expression into the calculator, you must use separate parentheses around the numerator and the denominator -- for example, type in the rational expression as follows: (9x-3)/(x-7).

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the calculator and enter the numerator of the rational expression -- be sure to enclose the numerator in parentheses. Failing to include the numerator in parentheses will result in an incorrect answer for the calculation.

    • 2

Press the divide key and enter the denominator of the rational expression -- again using parentheses.

    • 3

Press the enter key to have the calculator simplify the rational expression. You can check the answer by substituting it into the original expression.
