How to Extract Seaweed

The extract of seaweed forms a variety of soft gels at room temperature. These gels can increase the viscosity of a liquid, and as such, are used as additives in a wide array of consumer products, including desserts like ice cream and milkshakes, processed meats, toothpastes, shampoos, air fresheners, paints, inks and shoe polish. Seaweed extract is produced commercially on an industrial scale, and is typically sold at a large markup. You may find it more affordable to make it on your own. Fortunately, the process is a simple one that you can perform in your own kitchen.

Instructions

    • 1

Heat a pot of water to boiling on your stove. Once it is boiling, turn the flame off and let it sit.

    • 2

Cut your seaweed strips into 2-inch pieces and place them inside individual plastic bags.

    • 3

Add 2 teaspoons of hot water from your faucet to each plastic bag and seal them.

    • 4

Place the bags inside of your pot of formerly boiling water and anchor them underwater with a drinking glass. Allow them to sit for about 20 minutes.

    • 5

Place the strainer over top of the empty pot. Carefully remove the bags from the pot of water and separate the liquid from the seaweed strips by pouring the contents of each bag into the strainer. Allow the seaweed extract time to cool and then transport it to its final container.
