Kurt Hahn (1886-1974) is the founder of experiential learning, and is the inspiration for the Expeditionary Learning schools of today. He developed many institutions, including the outdoor leadership program, Outward Bound, and inspired the creation of many others. The expeditionary model of learning is based off the Harvard Outward Bound Project, which was established in 1987 to increase experience-based learning in schools with urban-based programming.
Expeditionary Learning is a nationally recognized organization made up of educators who support teachers and school leaders, while training them how to implement the EL model in their districts. The EL model promotes a high level of student involvement by encouraging each student to take an active role in his education. This method produces strong leadership skills.
Research shows, schools that employ the EL model of learning surpass district averages on state and mandated tests repeatedly. In a national study conducted by Mountain Measurement, Inc. in August 2010, researchers found that 67 percent of students taught by the EL model for at least three years scored considerably higher than non-EL students in math, reading and language.
Students benefit through expeditionary learning by being pushed to be their best. The model challenges them, while motivating them to do well in school. The result is a successful, happy student.
