Number Tracing Activities

Tracing is an important step in learning to write. It develops eye-hand coordination, encourages the use of fine motor skills and helps a child understand the direction of writing, from left to right and from up to down. Tracing numbers will help a child learn to recognize and identify numerals. Try these activities at home with your child to encourage her prewriting and number skills.
  1. Worksheets

    • There are many resources available that provide tracing practice on a worksheet. Your local bookstore carries various options of workbooks that can be used. Popular books are have bright, colorful pictures and use large numbers that work better with little hands. Another resource for tracing worksheets is the Internet.

    Modeling Clay

    • Modeling clay is a popular children's toy, though it is also used in many educational activities. Write the number(s) your child is learning onto a large sheet of paper. Make sure the number is big enough for her to manipulate the clay on. Laminate or cover the number pages with clear contact paper so that they can be used again. Instruct your child to form her modeling clay over the number in the same shape. Depending on the age of your child, you may need to help for the first few times, however, she should pick up on the process quickly.

    Painting

    • Many children squeal with delight when they see the paint come out of storage. Combine this excitement with a number tracing activity to encourage a positive attitude about numbers. Write or use the computer to print numbers on a sheet of paper. Give your child a cotton swab and some paint. Let her dip the cotton swab into the paint and trace over the numbers by making small dots to cover the number.

    Erasing

    • This activity requires a dry erase board or chalkboard. Dry erase markers also can be used on the bathroom mirror or other glass surface. Write large numbers on the board or mirror. Tell your child to make the number disappear by tracing over it with one finger. To make this activity auditory as well as kinesthetic, have him say the number name as he traces over it.
