Goals & Objectives for School Library Media

School libraries provide numerous assets to students, as well as the faculty. The use of media in the library and on loan to the classrooms gives students the chance to experience new learning opportunities. Any head librarian should plan into the library's budget each year to expand the media to include new educational releases or technologies he feels will improve these experiences.
  1. Choices

    • Students and teachers need a variety of choices in the school library collection. Determine which materials are available for teachers only. There should be current information, as well as older items. These choices range from video, music, newspapers, magazines and books. Computer access offers the option to quickly update a collection with additional information that is constantly updated. This also provides students and teachers with the opportunity to upload their own materials.

    Reading

    • Reading is important to the entire learning process. Students learn to gain an appreciation of reading that lasts a lifetime. A library can plan storytelling or a reading hour for young children. Multimedia presentations help enforce readings with images and video. Activities should be available for students, such as coloring books related to the material. Older students still struggling with reading can participate in one-on-one sessions with a tutor.

    Classroom Interaction

    • The school library's media should work as part of the classroom. Librarians should talk to teachers about their weekly lesson plans to have the proper media choices available ahead of time. Students can work independently on more in-depth views on current lesson plans or expand to other topics. They will feel encouraged to participate in using the library, not just during school hours. Special hours need to be available to students after school. This will help students find the time necessary for completing homework, such as essays, that require research.

    Special Events

    • Plan special events that make use of media throughout the year that encourage teachers and students, as well as parents. This allows librarians to interact with the family members to show what the library has on offer, as well as create educational partnerships for the future. Theme events may coincide with holidays, as well as special occasions for the area. If possible, try to bring in authors to present their work to the children. The authors give students a unique look into the story and its creation. Taped messages may be used, if the author is unable to attend.
