The inverse of a function is, essentially, the opposite of the function. On a graph, the inverse of a function would be its reflection across a line. In order to find the mathematical inverse of a function you need to work backward and do the opposite of everything you did in the original function. For example, if you divided by two you would now multiply by two, and if you subtracted five you would now add five.

1
Look at your original function. For example, 4x + 7.

2
Subtract seven. If your original function is addition, the inverse would be subtraction.

3
Divide by four. Your original function is multiplication, so the inverse would be division. The inverse of 4x + 7 would be (x - 7)/4
