Standard Ninth Grade Mathematics Projects

The elements considered standard in a ninth grade math class vary from state to state. As a result, the projects that a ninth grader will engage in also differ based on those state requirements. Despite the different definitions of standard ninth grade math, there are often similarities and some projects are applicable in multiple areas of the country.
  1. Application Projects

    • In New York, students are expected to know how to use mathematics to deal with problems that arise in the outside world. Florida also wants its ninth graders to be able to analyze real world data. Algebra is a common ninth grade math topic, so have your students engage in the Buy a Car Algebra WebQuest, where they will use their knowledge of algebra, data collection and decision making to complete the task.

    Analyzing Data

    • Ninth grade students in Georgia need to know how to compare statistics such as mean and median, and how random samples are selected and used to represent a larger group. Idaho wants students to arrange these types of information in graphs and charts. Have students conduct a survey of the school or community about an issue important to them, such as whether school uniforms should be implemented or if the community should start a park clean-up program. The students will analyze the data, create visual representations of it, and present their findings to the class.

    Writing Connections

    • New York requires its ninth grade math students to be able to write down an outline and explanation for solving problems, and to use technical writing skills to draw conclusions about math. In Florida, students have to understand the verbal representations of numbers and functions. Have students write word problems and exchange them with classmates. The students have to solve each other's word problems, explain the process that they used, and write the terms and definitions for the equations and processes that they used.

    Measurement

    • Idaho wants its ninth grade students to know how to measure and utilize circumferences, perimeters, areas of a triangle and the volume of a cylinder. In Ohio, students should know how to convert measurements. Divide students up into groups and assign each of them a building to research. Their task will be to construct a scale model or drawing of the building, and explain to the class how they figured out the measurements for their building.
