How to Identify Point Coordinates

If you've ever looked at a mathematical graph, chances are you've seen dots drawn on the graph. These dots are known as points, and they possess coordinates that indicate their location on a graph. The coordinates disclose where the point lies in terms of the vertical axis and the horizontal axis. If you take an algebra or calculus course in high school or college, you will have to be able to identify point coordinates and perform graphing tasks using these coordinates.

      Locate the x and y axes. The x-axis will be the horizontal line of the graph, and the y-axis will be the vertical line that intersects the x axis.

      Locate a point and count to the right or left on the x axis to see how many spaces over the point lies horizontally. The numbers to the left of the x and y intersection will be negative, and the numbers to the right will be positive. For example, if there is a point that lies four spaces to the right on the x-axis, its x-coordinate would be 4.

      Count the spaces up or down for the same point to determine its y-coordinate. The upper numbers on the y-axis will be positive, and the numbers below the graph's intersection will be negative. For instance, if the point that you were tracking was three spaces below the main intersection of the graph, its y-coordinate would be -3.

      Write the coordinates of the point within a set of parentheses. List the x-coordinate first, followed by a comma and then the y-coordinate. In this example, you would write (4, -3).
