How to Plot a Line on an X-Y Graph

Graphs are where math and art intersect, and drawing graphs is as easy as it is useful. So much of math is intangible, but graphs help make abstract concepts real for visual learners by converting numbers and trends into pictures. In nearly every field, graphs' ability to chart trends and patterns over time makes them invaluable aids for planning for the future. The basis for all graphs, no matter how complex, is plotting lines on X-Y graphs.

Instructions

    • 1

Plot the first point on the graph. The number for the horizontal x-axis is always first and the number for the vertical y-axis is always second. If the coordinates given are (4,-6), plot the first number, 4, four units to the right of the origin (0,0) on the x-axis, then -6, or 6 units down from the origin on the y-axis.

    • 2

Repeat the process to plot the next point on the graph.

    • 3

Use a ruler to draw a straight line connecting the two points. When connecting more than two points, make sure you connect them in the order given.
