How to Correct Bad Penmanship

Bad penmanship might is often associated with doctors quickly writing patients' prescriptions, but that doesn't mean that you need sloppy handwriting to earn your MD. In fact, handwriting that is neat and clear makes life easier in many ways. It makes your papers easier to grade for professors, and it makes your lecture notes and shopping lists easier to read.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your pencil or pen correctly. To do this, handle your writing utensil with your fingertips, instead of with your wrist. Place your thumb close to the lower portion of the pencil to gain steadiness and control. Put both your thumb and index finger on the highest part of the pencil.

Observe your muscles when writing. To attain neat handwriting, focus on aligning both your shoulders and your forearms in a graceful and fluid manner.

    • 3

Use a light touch. To write in a neat and smooth manner, lightly maneuver your pencil. Abstain from squeezing and clutching onto your pencil in a tight way, as that could lead to blotting (if you're writing with a pen) and your writing being stiff and hard to read. Squeezing can also cause you to experience aching in your hands and fingers.

Pay attention to the position of your hand. Maintain a hovering and elevated wrist during writing. You do not want your hand or arms to make contact with your desk at any point.

    • 5

Maintain proper posture. The way you hold your back can affect your penmanship. Keep your back straight but avoid rigidity and stiffness. Focus on being as relaxed as possible when you write.

    • 6

Practice a lot. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. To improve your handwriting, concentrate on improving all of your letters, uppercase and lowercase. Do this by writing out the alphabet (uppercase and lowercase) five times a day on a daily basis.
