How Are Breezes Created?

On hot summer days, people often welcome a cool breeze. During the frigid days of winter, however, a cool breeze is usually the last thing people want. Many events cause breezes. Things such as temperature changes, weather, solar events and cosmic events all play a part in air movement on Earth. Take a look at some of the ways breezes are formed on this planet.
  1. Convection Cycle

    • The main way breezes are made on Earth is by the convection cycle. As hot air rises and cold air sinks, the air movement between the hot and cold air masses stir up a breeze. When a hot, moist air mass meets a cold, moist air mass, the masses fight against each other and cause breezes, strong wind, rain and tornadoes. Even people who are far away from the storm feel breezes.

    Atmospheric Circulation

    • Atmospheric circulation is another way breezes are formed. The rotation of the planet and the difference of heat between the equator and the poles creates a breeze. These breezes are known as cells or belts of wind. Initially, scientists thought there were two belts or cells of wind, but scientists now think there are four.

    Breezes From Bodies Of Water

    • Another way breezes are formed is off of oceans, seas or large bodies of water. The heat from the sun warms the water and causes evaporation. As the water evaporates, the warm air rises. The rising vapors pull the air. This drawing movement creates a breeze. That's why there is always a breeze on the ocean, sea or any large body of water. Valleys, hills and forests block breezes from moving to areas further away from the water.

    Changes on Earth's Surface Breeze

    • Major changes on the Earth's surface create breezes. The sudden change of the Earth's plates, especially, on a large scale cause movement. This creates air motion that causes breezes. Volcanic heat released into the atmosphere causes a chimney flue effect. The hot air rises, making the air move, creating a breeze. Charged particles coming out of the volcano cause lightning and changes in weather. These changes make more breezes occur.
