How to Graph Organizers for Note Taking

Taking notes with graphical organizers makes it possible to visually connect ideas and thoughts from a lecture. Rather than scattered notes on a page that bear no direction, a graphical organizer puts ideas into separate objects that contain topics, subheadings, and examples or descriptions. In addition, the visual representation of ideas and topics from a lecture can help you connect separate topics to understand the main idea in a cohesive whole.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the center of your graphic organizer the main idea of the lecture. For example, if you are taking notes on "Romeo and Juliet," the center object should be labeled "Romeo and Juliet."

    • 2

Draw lines that branch out from the main idea. At the end of each of these lines you will draw an object, such as a circle or square, that will occupy a subheading. These different objects will be topics that expound upon the main idea. In our example, these subheadings could be themes discussed in the play, such as love and revenge.

    • 3

Draw even more lines out from the subheadings to create objects that contain detailed descriptions and examples of the topic. If the instructor discusses the theme of love in "Romeo and Juliet," organize your notes around the "Love" subheading. Your graphic organizer will look like a web.
