Personality Traits of Classroom Teachers

Classroom teachers should posses certain personality traits in order to be successful in their careers. These innate personality traits will help the teacher gain and maintain control of the classroom, earn the respect of the students, parents and other teachers and be successful at teaching students. A teacher can develop certain aspects of his personality to better teach students.
  1. Patience

    • A classroom teacher should have patience, as she will be dealing with a large group of students with a wide range of personalities and interpersonal skills. A teacher with patience will be able to deal with unruly or disorderly students with a level head and make appropriate decisions. If a teacher lacks patience,s he may be quick to anger and get easily frustrated which can cause her to lose control of the classroom.

    Creativitiy

    • A successful teacher should be creative. A creative teacher will be able to find innovative solutions to problems that arise in the classroom. A creative teacher will also find interesting and lesson-appropriate crafts and projects that will appeal to children. Creative teachers will engage students in thought-provoking conversations and find creative ways of answering hard questions. Though a teacher can plan many aspects of her curriculum, there will always be times when she must find quick and creative activities to fill time.

    Encouraging

    • Teachers who are encouraging will help students overcome obstacles and reach their goals. There are times when students may encounter an academic lesson that is particularly difficult. An encouraging teacher will help the student continue to press forward and continue to try to overcome the obstacle. An encouraging teacher will also help students reach for long-term goals such as graduation and will use encouraging and positive words when dealing with students.

    Other Personality Traits

    • A successful teacher will have have a thirst for knowledge. A teacher who is also an enthusiastic student will help his students become excited about the subject and learning in general. A teacher should also posses a good sense of humor. Teachers are put into some stressful situations. A teacher with a sense of humor can navigate out of the situation and towards a solution with a smile on his face.
