How to Get Your Children to Improve on Reading Tests

Reading tests are designed to evaluate teacher and curriculum effectiveness and can highlight deficiencies in student reading comprehension. However, educators and parents who focus on improving students' overall reading comprehension rather than drilling students on test questions and answers may better increase students' academic achievement. Students whose reading skills need improvement can benefit from extra reading instruction and practice both at school and at home. Instilling in children the importance of reading from an early age increases the likelihood that they will read more, increasing comprehension and likely improving their scores on reading tests.

Instructions

    • 1

Motivate kids to read by providing fun books that interest them. Praise children whenever they read.

    • 2

Teach kids the importance of reading outside the classroom. Encourage children to read everyday items at their reading level, such as magazines, newspapers or even grocery lists.

    • 3

Encourage oral language development. Discussions about reading assignments allow students to show off their reading comprehension and practice language skills.

    • 4

Increase parental involvement. Parents can read at home with their children. Taking children to the bookstore or library regularly ensures students have easy access to books.

    • 5

Focus on vocabulary to help children understand unfamiliar words. Allow older students to use dictionaries while reading.

    • 6

Instruct kids on reading comprehension methods, such as scanning the text for important ideas and writing down questions while they read.

    • 7

Promote daily reading. Practice is the best way to increase reading comprehension.
