When a student reviews his folder, he is able to see how he has progressed over the school year. He should also be able to remember each test or project and give the teacher feedback. Teachers can use this review to build a student's self esteem.
A portfolio assessment can reveal a student's weaknesses. A teacher and student can work together to create some learning goals with an action plan so that the student can improve her academic problems. The plan can be revised over time with another portfolio review. The teacher can then revise, continue or stop the plan as needed.
Teachers gain a better understanding of their students with portfolio assessments. Upon learning of a student's fascination with a topic, the teacher can provide lesson assignments catering to the topic. Portfolio assessments are more flexible than subjecting students to an array of tests. Teachers learn what students can do instead of what they know.
Teachers can request parents to periodically review their child's portfolio. Parents can then intervene and assist the teacher with their child's problem areas. Teachers and parents can brainstorm ways to help students improve.
