Fifth & Sixth Grade Science Cell Projects

Creating a project that describes the parts of a cell should be no problem for fifth and sixth grade students in science class if they use a little creativity and some help from mom and dad. Using household items like jello, hair gel, cake mix and candy or buttons, students can illustrate their knowledge of cell membranes, cytoplasm, nuclei, cell organisms and the function of these objects as they work within animal and plant cells.
  1. Jello Cells

    • Fifth and sixth grade students can create plant and animal cells from green and red jello. Green represents plant cells and red represents animal. Use golf balls, filled balloons or other large circular objects to represent the nucleus. Jelly worms, cooked spaghetti, candy, confetti or other string-like items can be used to represent cell organelles. Add the items to the jello two hours after it has been in the refrigerator to set.

    Cake Cells

    • Prepare a cake mix. Bake and frost it as usual. Use a very large jawbreaker or similarly sized round candy to represent the nucleus. Distribute other candies throughout the top and sides of the cake to represent the organelles.

    Dough Cell

    • Add equal parts flour and salt with water to create a dough ball. Add green or red food coloring to create cytoplasm and designate the cell as either plant or animal. Use beads, pieces of yarn, confetti and other small items to represent the cell organelles. Add large buttons for the nucleus.

    Gel Cell

    • Fill a plastic bag with one cup of hair gel as the cytoplasm. The bag is the cell membrane. Add one teaspoon of glitter to represent the cell organelles. Designate a large button and add it to the bag as the nucleus.
