How Music Helps Grades

Music instruction and education isn't just for entertainment purposes. It can help your child do better in school as well. According to The National Association for Music Education, students who had previously taken formal music instruction showed higher SAT scores than those with no music background. This is just one reason that music is important for your child to improve in all areas of academia.
  1. Singing

    • If your child is involved in singing, whether it be for fun or singing instruction such as in choir or glee club, you might notice she excels in classes that utilize poetry, vocabulary, reading and language skills. As she improves her voice and works hard to learn the lyrics, her vocabulary and reading skills hit a high level of aptitude. Singing also improves overall grade potential through the visualization skills that come from singing and acting, such as in school musicals and drama class.

    Dancing

    • Aside from the strength and flexibility learned through dance class that improve a child's physical fitness grades, other classes are receiving high marks as well. Dancing improves coordination, concentration through learning difficult choreography, improved self-esteem and further improves musical skill as much of dance requires the listening of beats and incorporating that into dance steps and movement.

    Musical Instruments

    • Playing a musical instrument is time-consuming and requires vigilant, hard work to be done well. With the training and practice of learning an instrument, children keep to a steady beat that improves reading, critical thinking and focus skills. These skills become important when the child is studying hard and doing classroom assignment, which further improves grades in all areas of academia.

    Formal Music Instruction

    • Perhaps one of the most important aspects of music that leads to better grades is formal music instruction, which might incorporate singing lessons, musical instruments or any form of music and sound. Formal instruction improves a child's focus, discipline and determination. These skills carry on into other areas of academics, such as math, science, history and English.
