Fun Ways to Celebrate the Super Bowl in a First Grade Classroom

Super Bowl is fun enough to celebrate with adults, but imagine how exciting it can be when you involve first graders in the fun. Some children look forward to Super Bowl as if it’s another Halloween, and there are several activities that teachers can introduce to bring the event into the classroom.
  1. Super Bowl Shuffle

    • Adult fans of the Super Bowl probably know the Super Bowl Shuffle song, and with first graders, a song and dance activity is certain to be a winner. You can get lyrics, music and even a video online. If you know how to play a musical instrument, such as a guitar or piano, download the chords and notes of the song for an even livelier performance. Ask your students to come up with dance moves to go along with the song or modify the lyrics together to make them specific to students' names, the teams playing or lessons currently being taught in the classroom.

Super Bowl Arts and Sculpture Contest

    • Combine your art class with a Super Bowl theme and motivate your first graders to produce unique art pieces. Ask your students to name their favorite players or team and think of a diorama or sculpture pieces that can best represent them. They can draw, create clay sculptures or even combine several materials together. Ask them to incorporate how their favorite players affect their attitude towards studying and or what values they see are important for a team to win.

    Super Bowl Nacho Party

    • The Monday after Super Bowl Sunday can be a Super Bowl party day. Decorate the classroom with the logos and items that represent the teams that played and ask students to bring some snacks and refreshments for a celebration. Prepare some games, such as letting students answer trivia questions related to the event. Give out some apparel, stickers or any other items related to the game to the winning group.

    Super Bowl Costume Party

    • On the Friday before Super Bowl Sunday, ask your students to come to school wearing the best football costume they can find. Decorate the classroom to look like a football gym or stadium for added effect. Team uniforms and hoodies are some of the easiest costumes to find. To make it more fun, add a few parlor games for the kids, with the idea that their groups or teams will go head to head with each other, just like at the Super Bowl. Prepare football related prizes, such as footballs, helmets and other apparel for the kids with the best costumes.
