Fifth grade verb activities can incorporate other parts of speech such as nouns and adjectives for a more comprehensive review of how different types of words may work together. Activities can include composing specific types of writing such as diamante poems. Diamante poems have seven lines arranged in diamond shapes and are created around oppositions such as hot and cold. Each line is composed of individual or groups of nouns, verbs and adjectives. Students can compose their poems on any two oppositional topics, with the activity providing hands-on application of the relationship between verbs, nouns and adjectives.
Trivia games such as those modeled after "Jeopardy!" offer students an interactive and competitive alternative to traditional lessons. Using the chalkboard or an electronic slide presentation, teachers present fifth graders with a playing board divided into five categories with five questions each ranging from 100 to 500 points. Categories can include verb tenses, linking verbs, compound verbs, auxiliary verbs and transitive/intransitive verbs. Other options may include categories broken down by specific verbs tenses such as past or present.
Part of learning about verbs for fifth graders is being able to identify correct format. Multiple choice activities provide students with various options in completing or matching word combinations and sentences to the correct verb. For example, a multiple choice activity can be composed that focuses on subject-verb agreement. Students are presented with a sentence that contains a subject-verb combination. Below the sentence are five choices; if the subject and verb are in agreement, they select the first option. However, if the subject and verb do not agree, the student must choose from the four remaining options. This type of activity can be customized for various lessons on verbs including verb tense.
While verb games and activities can be performed as part of a group, independent games such as crossword puzzles offer fifth graders the chance to perfect their skills with verbs. Crossword puzzles can be custom made for different lessons of verbs. For example, a puzzle could be created for help in learning the different kinds of verbs such as verb tenses or compound verbs. Other options may include the conversion of verbs from present to past tense, with clues asking for the past tense conjugation of a verb.
