How to Convert Square Feet to Room Dimensions

A room’s dimensions are comprised of three elements -- the room’s width, length and height. It’s much easier to convert room dimensions into square feet than it is to perform the reverse calculation. That’s because if the square footage of a room is known but the room dimensions are not, you can only use the square feet amount to make an estimate as to what the length and width dimensions of the room are.

  Write down the square footage, such as 108 square feet.

  Estimate the width and length used to calculate the square footage if these amounts are not known. The formula for calculating square feet is width multiplied by length. Therefore, the width and length dimensions of the room can be determined via an estimate by making a list of all the pairs of factors for the square footage amount, then picking the pair of factors that make the most sense given the appearance of the room. For example, the list of factor pairs for 108 include 1 * 108 = 108, 2 * 54 = 108, 3 * 36 = 108, 4 * 27 = 108, 6 * 18 = 108 and 9 * 12 = 108.

  Look at the width (side to side) and length (front to back) shape of the room. Given the apparent width to length ratio, determine which pair factors make the most sense. The first pair of factors, 1 foot by 108 feet would not make sense for any room so you can eliminate that factor.

  Rewrite the width and length amounts in long form. These are the room dimensions. For example, room width = 9 feet and room length = 12 feet.
