Study the playbook and understand your responsibilities on each play. While youth football playbooks may not be as complicated as an NFL playbook, the youth football quarterback must know each play and execute each of them on the field.
Learn what each of the other players on the field are doing on each play. The quarterback must not only know what he or she needs to do on a given play but what the teammates are doing on that play. It may help to have the quarterback play other positions for a few plays during practice to get an understanding of what his responsibilities are on a specific play.
Practice the proper throwing mechanics. If youth football quarterbacks do not learn proper passing mechanics early on, they can develop bad habits that can limit their ability to play quarterback in youth football and beyond.
Monitor the youth football quarterbacks footwork during a game. With players that have yet to reach physical maturity, coordination can be problem. Make sure that the player keeps proper balance whether it is a passing or running play. If the quarterback is off balance, it can spell doom for a play before it begins.
Be decisive on each play during the game. The youth football quarterback must make quick and decisive decisions on each play. If the quarterback hesitates, the timing of the play can be lost and the defense will react and tackle the quarterback for a loss.
