Why a period after claesz or davidsz in dutch names?

In Dutch names, the period after "Claesz" or "Davidsz" is used as an abbreviation for "zoon" (son). For example, "Jan Claesz" means "Jan, son of Claes". This form of patronymic naming was common in the Netherlands until the 19th century.
