What is the Gaelic meaning of Glasgow?

Dear friend, "Glasgow" doesn't have a literal meaning in the Gaelic language. The name Glasgow likely originates from Old Welsh or Cumbric, a now-extinct Brittonic Celtic language formerly spoken in the northern part of Britain. Glasgow's early names appear in the annals of Saint Kentigern (died c. 603 A.D.), first written down in the 12th century.

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, Glas means "greenish blue water in a river" in Brittonic, while cou or cov ("hollow") or gou (a form of gobha, “smith”) appears as possible suffixes/prefixes, resulting in interpretations ranging from "a hollow on a green river" to "the green hollow” to ”green smith.” While some linguistic theories support Cumbric as the source of the name, others claim a Gaelic etymology, and both options remain the subject of scholarly debate.
