Is it slang to say was instead of etwas in German?
"Etwas", meaning "something", cannot be swapped for "was" if you mean to ask or answer whether something exists. This is incorrect or even confusing.
However, "was" is used colloquially in northern German to mean "etwas" in all other uses.
