How do you write in Japanese?

To write in Japanese, you need to master three writing systems:

- Hiragana

- Katakana

- Kanji

1. Hiragana

- Hiragana is a set of 46 characters that represent the sounds of the Japanese language. Each character represents one mora, which is a sound unit in Japanese.

- Hiragana is used to write words that do not have kanji characters, such as particles and conjunctions.

2. Katakana

- Katakana is another set of 46 characters that are used to write foreign words, onomatopoeia, and scientific terms.

- Each katakana character represents one mora, just like hiragana.

3. Kanji

- Kanji are Chinese characters that have been adopted for use in Japanese. There are thousands of kanji characters, each with its own meaning and pronunciation.

- Kanji are used to write the majority of words in Japanese, including nouns, verbs, and adjectives.

Combination

In addition to these three writing systems, Japanese also uses a combination of hiragana and kanji to write words. This is known as furigana.

- Furigana are small hiragana characters that are placed above kanji characters to indicate their pronunciation.

- Furigana is often used to help children and foreigners learn to read and write Japanese.
