What does an infinitive look like in English?

An infinitive in English always consists of the word "to" followed by the base form of a verb.

For example:

* to go

* to eat

* to sleep

* to be

* to think

It's important to note that while the "to" is usually present (this is called the "full infinitive"), there are some cases where it's omitted, particularly after auxiliary verbs like "can," "should," "will," "may," etc. These are called "bare infinitives."

For example:

* I can go.

* You should eat.

* They will sleep.
