What does the ditto symbol mean?

The ditto symbol "〃" means the same as above or the same before. It is often used in lists to indicate that the same item or information is repeated for multiple items. For example, if a list of groceries includes "apples 3", "bananas 5", "oranges 2", and "ditto grapefruit", it means that 2 grapefruits should be purchased, the same quantity as the oranges listed above. The ditto symbol is commonly used in various contexts where brevity and simplicity are desired, such as lists, spreadsheets, and invoices.
