Classification of sentence according to purpose?

Sentences are classified according to their purpose into four main categories:

1. Declarative Sentences: These sentences make a statement or assertion. They declare something to be true or false. They end with a period (.).

*Example:* The cat sat on the mat.

2. Interrogative Sentences: These sentences ask a question. They always end with a question mark (?).

*Example:* Did you see the cat?

3. Imperative Sentences: These sentences give a command, make a request, or express a plea. They often end with a period (.), but can sometimes end with an exclamation point (!) depending on the strength of the command or request. The subject (you) is often implied rather than explicitly stated.

*Example:* Close the door. (Command)

*Example:* Please pass the salt. (Request)

*Example:* Leave me alone! (Plea/Strong Command)

4. Exclamatory Sentences: These sentences express strong emotion or feeling. They always end with an exclamation point (!).

*Example:* That's fantastic!

It's important to note that a single sentence can sometimes combine elements of these categories. For example, a sentence could be both interrogative and exclamatory: "Didn't you see that amazing sunset?!"
